The Kykeon Question: Was the Eleusinian Sacrament a Drug?
Barley, water and mint. In 1978 a banker, the chemist who invented LSD, and a Boston classicist argued there was something else in it — and that the greatest secret of the ancient world was pharmacology.

In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, the grieving goddess arrives at Eleusis in disguise and is offered wine. She refuses it, and asks instead for barley meal and water flavoured with pennyroyal. She drinks that, and the cult is founded.
That drink is the kykeon, and it is one of vanishingly few concrete physical details we have about the rite. Initiates fasted, walked fourteen miles, arrived after dark, and broke the fast with it before going into the hall.
People have been raising an eyebrow at this since at least the eighteenth century. In 1978 it became a research programme, and it has been unresolved ever since.
The Road to Eleusis
The book had three authors, and the line-up is why it landed so hard.
R. Gordon Wasson was a banker turned mycologist who had spent decades documenting ritual mushroom use in Mexico. Albert Hofmann was the Swiss chemist who first synthesised LSD — working from ergot alkaloids, which meant no living person understood ergot chemistry better. Carl Ruck was a professor of classics at Boston University, and remained one, though not without difficulty.
Their argument runs in four steps:
- The kykeon was made from barley grown on the plain at Eleusis.
- Mediterranean barley is routinely infected by Claviceps purpurea — ergot — which grows visible dark bodies where grains should be.
- Ergot contains a mix of alkaloids. Some are savage vasoconstrictors. Others are psychoactive, and chemically adjacent to what Hofmann had worked from.
- The toxic ones dissolve poorly in water; some psychoactive ones dissolve better. So a simple water extraction could, in principle, give you visions without the poison.
The conclusion is a good one: the priesthood at Eleusis had stumbled onto a pharmacological technique and guarded it as the central secret of the cult for two thousand years.
What actually supports it
The consistency. Whatever happened in the Telesterion happened to thousands of people at once, worked on wildly different individuals, and kept working for two millennia. Staging can do a great deal, but reliable mass effect at that scale is a demanding spec.
The refusal of wine. The founding myth goes out of its way to have Demeter reject the standard Greek ritual drink for this specific alternative. That's an odd detail to invent unless the drink mattered.
The secrecy makes more sense. If the secret were a doctrine or a piece of theatre, why protect the recipe? If it were a technique, protection is obvious — and it explains why the knowledge died outright rather than leaking gradually.
The Spanish residues. The strongest evidence, and it arrived decades after the book. At Mas Castellar de Pontós in Catalonia, a site with a Greek-influenced ritual complex, analysis found ergot alkaloids in residue from a drinking vessel and in human dental calculus. Somebody in the ancient western Mediterranean was consuming ergot ritually. The 1978 authors couldn't prove that. Now it's established.
What undermines it
The chemistry is disputed, and it's the load-bearing claim. Everything rests on the separation step. Pharmacologists have challenged both the selectivity of water extraction and the dose consistency. Ergot content varies enormously between infected heads, fields and seasons. Standardising that for several thousand people a night, without casualties, is a tall order.
And the casualties are missing. Ergotism was notorious in medieval Europe — convulsions, gangrene, lost limbs. If Eleusis was dosing people annually at scale for centuries, some proportion of failures should have surfaced in a documentary record that gossiped about everything. Nothing does.
No ancient source describes any technique. Not a hint, not a reference to specialist priestly knowledge, nothing.
And there is no residue evidence from Eleusis. The Spanish finds show possibility. They don't show practice at this site.
The answer nobody in the fight likes
There's a third possibility that both camps tend to skate past: the staging may simply have been enough.
Run the nine days as engineering rather than religion. The candidate has been fasting. They've walked fourteen miles in a chanting crowd. Masked strangers screamed abuse at them on a bridge. They've been waiting for this for at least six months, often years, and everyone they know who's been through it has refused to say what happens.
Then they're packed into a pitch-dark hall with thousands of others, in a building designed for precisely this, and at the climax there's an enormous light and a figure appearing in it.
Fasting, sleep deprivation, sensory manipulation, crowd effect and expectancy are a well-studied combination, and they produce powerful, reasonably consistent altered states with no chemistry involved. Every element is attested. None of it needs a drug.
The ergot hypothesis may be solving a problem that doesn't exist.
Where it stands
- The kykeon existed and initiates drank it. Certain.
- It was barley, water and pennyroyal. Well attested.
- Ergot infects Mediterranean barley, and was consumed ritually somewhere in the ancient west. Established.
- Ergot was used at Eleusis. Possible. Not demonstrated.
- A reliable water separation of the good alkaloids from the bad was known. Disputed, and unattested.
- The experience needed a drug at all. Not established, and arguably unnecessary.
What would settle it is dull: residue analysis on vessels properly excavated from the sanctuary, published with controls. Nothing else will.
Until then we're arguing about the chemistry of a drink mentioned in a hymn — because it's the only physical evidence anyone left us.
Questions people actually ask
What was the kykeon?
The ritual drink initiates took at Eleusis to break their fast. The Homeric Hymn to Demeter describes barley groats and water flavoured with pennyroyal, a mint. Demeter refuses wine and asks for this instead.
Was the kykeon a psychedelic drug?
